Many people worry about becoming forgetful and forgetting important details, events, etc. People seem to think that the first sign of forgetfulness is the first sign of Alzheimer's disease however this is not always true. As people get older which inevitable, some notice that it takes longer for them to learn new things in addition the inability to remember basic information such as where they put their glasses. This is normally a sign of mild forgetfulness and isn't considered a memory problem. Researchers have found that healthy older people can do as well as younger people on learning or complex memory tests if they are given enough time. Some of the causes of memory loss are medication side effects, chronic alcoholism, tumors or infections in the brains, vitamin B-12 deficiency, blood clots, possibly dementia can cause memory loss. Additional causes are thyroid, kidney, or liver disorders can cause memory loss. Emotional issues such as depression, anxiety or stress can make an individual more forgetful and they can also be mistaken for having dementia.

Some people have a health condition called Amnestic Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) which causes more memory problem for older people however it is not as severe as Alzheimer's disease as they are able to complete their normal daily activities. Those with dementia need to be under the care of their doctor. The doctor will watch for physical and mental behavioral problems such as aggression, agitation, or wandering. Symptoms may include the inability to remember things, asking the same question or repeating the same story over and over, becoming lost in familiar locations, inability to follow directions, getting disoriented about time, people, and places, and neglecting personal safety, hygiene, and nutritition. This condition may be treated with prescription medications such as Aricept, Exelon, Razadyne, and Namenda.

      Make "to do" lists, plan tasks in order to create a sense of familiarity. The person will be able to mentally connect things and remember them better.

      Develop hobbies or interests that involve the use of the body and mind. Hobbies such as gardening or knitting will help with increasing memory.

      Limit drinking alcohol as drinking heavily can cause memory loss and permanent brain damage.

      Exercise on a regular basis as this helps with relieving stress, depression and anxiety. Find activities that are of enjoyment.

      Seek the attention of the doctor for a thorough physical and mental health evaluations in order to find out if there are more serious memory problems. The doctor will be able to diagnose and evaluate all that happening in the person's body.

      Ask the doctor about Amnestic Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI). Signs of MCI include misplacing things, forgetting appointments and events, and having trouble with coming up with words they desire to say. Researchers have found that those with this illness have gone to develop Alzheimer's within a certain amount of time.

      Seek further doctor assistance for dementia and vascular dementia. Vascular dementia requires more care such as preventing strokes from occurring. Additionally, control high blood pressure, monitoring and treating high blood cholesterol, and diabetes and not smoking.
